This complete unit is designed to compliment the recent unit rolled out by NSW Education Department 2026.

It is based on the unit of work Unit 4 CAPA (Creative Arts) · Drama and Visual Arts STAGE 3

This is the complete unit.

Duration: 8 weeks + 2 weeks optional consolidation

This unit teaches students to explore retro-futurism, blending vintage aesthetics with futuristic concepts to imagine new possibilities.

In Drama, students explore melodramatic characters, situations and structures through improvising and devising. Students use their knowledge of melodrama to collaboratively devise and script their own futuristic melodrama performance.

In Visual Arts, students explore retrofuturism in artmaking through steampunk. They use printmaking processes to create cogwheel-inspired foam prints and apply their understanding of materials, techniques and 3D sculptural processes to collaboratively plan, make and exhibit a steampunk-inspired wire sculpture.

The Creative Arts K–6 sample units are designed as a 16-lesson sequence, comprising of 8 Drama lessons and 8 Visual Arts lessons, with 4 optional consolidation lessons. The lessons are written in sequence to show the flow of learning and the building of concepts across lessons. To implement the syllabus and meet teaching requirements, teachers are expected to teach one Drama and one Visual Arts lesson each week. Sample units have been written to be flexible, allowing for schools to implement lessons from either or both focus areas, depending on their individual context.
