This complete unit teaches students about personal safety strategies to support respectful relationships, including consent. Students apply protective behaviours in both online and offline environments and explore how an agreed code of conduct for digital devices can enhance wellbeing. Students examine factors that strengthen identity, explain how a positive mindset contributes to resilience and create texts that show how self-management enhances relationships and wellbeing. In PE, students set and monitor goals. They refine movement skills like balancing and striking, applying them in a variety of games, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander games.
The PDHPE K–6 units are designed as a 16-lesson sequence, comprising of 8 PDH lessons and 8 PE lessons, with 4 optional consolidation lessons. The lessons are written in sequence to show the flow of learning and the building of concepts across lessons. To implement the syllabus and meet teaching requirements, teachers are expected to teach one PDH and one PE lesson each week.
Respectful Relationships Education and Child Protection
Child protection education is mandatory in every stage of learning from Kindergarten to Year 10 as part of the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) K–10 Syllabus.
The lessons in this unit provide a clear and structured approach to teaching respectful relationships education and child protection. By implementing this unit, schools will meet the mandatory child protection content requirements.
Creating a safe, respectful and inclusive classroom
Before delivering sensitive content, staff should complete a self-awareness check-in with themselves and a trusted supervisor to prepare emotionally and professionally.
As some of the content in the PDH lessons in this unit may be deemed as sensitive or controversial, they should be reviewed, before use, to ensure they are appropriate for the school context. Please refer to the Controversial issues in schools procedure for further details.
For this content to be effective, staff must ensure they are creating a supportive environment, informing parents and carers, preventing public disclosures and ready to use protective interrupting while following mandatory Child Protection reporting policies.
The Department’s Respectful Relationships Education resources have been incorporated into the PDH lessons in this unit. For additional information and resources to support this content please visit the Respectful Relationships Education website.

The learning in this unit will relate to ideas and content in Stage 2 Unit 7 and will be built on in future units as reflected in the Sample scope and sequence PDHPE K–6 scope and sequence.
