This unit is designed to compliment the recent unit rolled out by NSW Education Department 2025. It is based on the unit of work Unit 1 Science and Technology- Living things. The theme of this unit is "Observations and questions spark curiosity", which is the building block of scientific thinking.

16 hourly lessons plus 4 hours of additional/optional content. (1 term's work)

This unit teaches students to identify the 5 sense organs and their functions and how they use these to enhance their observations. Students investigate how living things survive and compare the characteristics of living and non-living things. They group animals based on their characteristics.

Some things you will need for this unit:

  • magnifying glasses

  • Clipboards for outside observations
  • Plants that can be observed for labelling and identifying parts.
  • Pictures of native plants and animals
  • Any samples of native plants eg paperbark, bloodwood, finger limes (these may already exist in your playground- it would be worth investigating your local area before commencement of the unit)

Important note

The font which has been used in this presentation is the Google font Edu NSW ACT foundation which needs to be downloaded onto your computer (this can be done by clicking on the blue link provided). You must restart your device once installed and all of the formatting will be correctly in place. This step is VERY important otherwise your units will be misaligned.
