This unit is designed to compliment the recent unit rolled out by NSW Education Department 2026.

It is based on the unit of work Unit 3 HSIE · People have lived in the past.

This is the complete unit.

Duration: 8 weeks + 2 weeks optional consolidation

This unit teaches students to recount memorable past events through stories, images, or objects, and sequence personal events and objects in order of recency. Students engage with Cultural objects to uncover information about the past and its relevance to the present. They compare features of daily life that have changed over time, using stories, images and objects as key sources of information.

This is a comprehensive unit which will save you hours of preparation time. These include printing sets of cards in some lessons, printing worksheets for assessment purposes so that work samples are available for each child.

Some things you will need for this unit:

  • writing materials
  • book "Greetings from Sandy Beach" by Bob Graham
  • Large blank book to make a class book
  • Objects which could be used for a celebration eg candle, balloon, present
  • Note: Request families provide photographs or objects connected to a celebration. Students will also need 3 images of events from different time periods in their life to sequence in Lesson 5. It may be easier to ask for all these at the one time.
  • digital devices
  • printed copies of images from school or community events
  • Three photographs of events of the student’s life which can be used to sequence the life of the student. For example, a baby image, a birthday, first day of school.

Important note

The font which has been used in this presentation is the Google font Edu NSW ACT foundation which needs to be downloaded onto your computer (this can be done by clicking on the blue link provided). You must restart your device once installed and all of the formatting will be correctly in place. This step is VERY important otherwise your units will be misaligned.
